Ford Island has been a hub for motion pictures and films as many of them like In Harm’s Way that starred John Wayne and Tora have been filmed there. Ford Island has been called by various names such as Rabbit Island, Marín’s Island, Little Goats Island, and Mokuʻumeʻume. Moku’ume’ume Is a native Hawaiian name which means the Island of Attraction. It is among the highly visited small islands of Hawaii because it was the epicenter of the attack on December 7, 1941. But the remarkable history of Ford Island goes back even before the time of Pearl Harbor attack.
The reason why native Hawaiians call it Moku’ume’ume is because once upon a time they used to play a game in which around a fire the chiefs used to mingle with common people. The native people used to recite chants and sing songs. But from the time settlements came into existence, it was called the Ford Island. It is an ideal place to house all types of vessels because the water that surrounds is ideally deep for them.
By the 1940, Ford Island had officially and exclusively become the property of the US Navy. On the morning of December 7, 1941 when the Japanese Forces attacked Pearl Harbor, the bulk of the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet was anchored near Ford Island. As a result of the attack, it had been badly damaged. The seaplane base on the island had dozens of long-range PBY patrol bombers that after the attack were able to locate the Japanese fleet. Along her coast were moored seven of the Pearl Harbor fleet’s nine battleships. Most of the patrol planes were destroyed in the attack.
